HOW TO REMOVE NORTON/SYMANTEC & INSTALL AVG By Peggy x8487
First remove all traces of Norton Anti-Virus and Symantec from a PC:
IF Norton Anti-Virus has not expired, close all programs, double click
the yellow NAV icon. Run automatic update and a full system scan (one
hour).
THEN Start>Settings>Control Panel>ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS:
Scroll thru the list one by one to find any/all products with names
Norton or Symantec (including Symantec Internet Security).
Click to select each one by one and then click CHANGE/REMOVE and then
approve REMOVE.
Remove all, then empty trash and restart computer if necessary.
Finally Start>Search>all files and folders. First Symantec. Select all
and right click delete in the Search window. Next search for Norton and
repeat procedure.
Start>Turn Off Computer>RESTART
Now Install AVG and have it do a complete scan of your computer:
Insert AVG CD. Start>My Computer>double click CD Drive
Drag avg7free file to your desktop. Close CD window.
Find the shortcut installer file for avg71free on your desktop.
Double click the and follow directions to install, approve the legal
restrictions, download and install updates (very important) one at a
time until a message appears saying there are no further updates
available at this time.
Finally you will be asked to do a full COMPLETE scan of your computer.
It will take almost 1 hour if it has been installed properly. When
complete there will be a window of results. If virus or worm, packrats
or whatever are found it will be obvious. Be sure that the offenders
are quarantined or deleted. Try to print those scan results and call me.

If all is well, close AVG. Find the AVGfree shortcuts on your desktop,
drag to the trash bin and empty it.
Double click the remaining AVG icon in the system tray. The control
window should have several blue buttons which means that everything is
in working order. If any are red, read the text and correct the
problem. Usually the problem is updates which need to be downloaded or
installed. If a message in the system tray (at the lower right corner
of your desktop) has a balloon saving AVG updates are ready to install,
please click as directed and download and install.
Some other considerations:
Check system tray frequently (lower right corner of the desktop). If
the AVG icon is gray. Double click and check to see what needs
attention, usually updates.
Updates are not downloaded or installed if your computer is not on. If
your computer is off when you are not working, it is wise to find the
control window button which allows you to schedule updating and set
updating to take place as your computer starts up or shuts down.
If computer behavior worries you because it is bizarre in some way.
Click the AVG icon, download and install updates and select a complete
scan of your computer.
